Work Diary - Evidence of Weather - Shoot 1

Evaluation

My starting point for this photography unit was wobbling between evidence and weather. I liked these two topics because I felt that I had a lot of ideas to expand on, and when I went out for the first shoot I felt that it was actually successful even though the weather was moody and drousy. I didn't have much ideas on what it was that I'd be shooting, but I knew that I wanted to look at colours, or lack of colour, and trees against the white sky because this creates some contrast which was something I enjoyed capturing in the first unit. For this shoot I looked at images that would portray winter and cold weather, and below are two of my photographs that metaphorically convey this theme. I concluded the shoot with a decision of my topic, which is officially evidence because I found that the types of images I can take in 'weather' I can also take in 'evidence', along with many other things also which is why evidence is going to be a very enjoyable and broad topic.

This is my favourite photograph that I took from Thursday's shoot. I like the way that the two different trees represent different seasons. In autumn and winter the leaves begin to fall from the trees to expose bare branches whereas in spring and summer the trees regain their life. The tree on the left is a symbol for spring/summer whilst the tree on the right is a symbol for autumn/winter. This image is therefore evidence of a variety of weather conditions. The white sky in the background allows the trees to stand out a lot clearer than they would if the sky was blue which was also a successful addition to this picture.

This was my second favourite image from the shoot. I was inspired for this one as I found an image where a bright leaf stood out against a dull background. This encouraged me to increase the saturation of the leaf and make the curves on the pavement darker using photoshop. The leaf contrasts effectively with the pavement and the water is evident on both things in this photograph which reinforces the fact that it had been raining; evidence of rain.

Progression

To progress this shoot further I would like to go out when the sky is more blue with clouds to capture a theme of summer. This means I can portray further evidence of seasons through sky photography. I'd also like to capture more effective pictures of raindrops, but this would require heavy rainfall, which I am unable to predict. Therefore, when the weather is in any one of these conditions I will aim to take these kind of pictures. I'd also like to look at raindrops on leaves and focus on close ups of the water droplets. For my next shoot however, I want to look at reflections of light and the colours that light produce through my crysta. I will do a home shoot and then take more in the studio.
